I first rang there in 1973 and one or two times after that in 1974. They
were not the most inspiring ring of ten!

There is an article about the bells in the RW of Jan 14th 1983. It says the
bells were last rung on 15th November 1978 at the opening of the Royal Free
Medical School and Hospital, it being opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II. It
also says

"When the new hospital was planned the site chosen was closer to the church
and when the foundations were dug, as early as 1964, move-ment began to
show in the main body of the church and ringing was stopped from about this
time (perhaps one should say discouraged) while the situation was reviewed."

I was wondering if anyone might be able to provide some more information
about the now lost 27cwt 10 what where here until 1982?, from what I can
work out the bells where regularly rung during the early 1900s but it would
seem that peal ringing virtually ended in 1905. Many sources I have come
across suggest that this might've been something to do with the royal free
hospital but there are some vague references to there being a local band
here in the 1950s so I wonder what exactly happened, There is also some
suggestion that ringing was apparently "discouraged" due to subsidence but
it would interesting to know if any quarter peals where rung on them prior
to their removal.

Many thanks

Oliver lee
