Bells by John Wallis in a reasonable geographical proximity to Newchurch include the two below, which suggest he was working on contracts in the general vicinity during that year and could well have worked for Newchurch:

Arreton: 5th of 6 = 1589

Portchester: 3rd of 3 = 1589.

There are some drawn examples of John Wallis’s lettering in Hampshire Church Bells (Colchester) – Page 44 – Plate 82.

Perhaps someone on the Island could take and share a photograph of the inscription on Arreton 5th which (according to Colchester) has the same “ANNO 1589” inscription as Newchurch 5th (albeit with the date characters in the correct order)??

Dear All,

I am researching a bell in our tower that was dated 5189 and possibly is linked to a bell in another local church with the same date and similar lettering. I have a tracing of the letters for both bells and suggestions as to the founder but thought I would contact you as well as do some local research. I do not have access to the towers to determine bell shape however I do have a photograph of the tracing courtesy of a handwritten journal by John Whitehead held by County Records office.

Regards

Cathy Lewis
