As a new member of this group I obviously have looked back through=
the=20
archive to see if anything interesting has been written. My eyes =
fell=20
on the messages about the Harrisons. Bearing in mind this is a si=
te=20
for those interested in bell history, I would like to correct a few=20
misconceptions and slurs. First of all the Harrison dynasty did not sta=
rt=20
and finish with James 3.
James 1 of Barrow on Humber the bellhanger,=
=20
brother of John of Chronometer fame, mostly used Lester & Pack bell=
s,=20
However towards the end of his life he cast a number of bells, notably =
six=20
for Hawkshead and in 1766 six for Masham, of these the fifth has been=20
replaced at Hawkshead I believe by Taylors and the treble at Masham.
He=20
was followed by James 2 who did not follow the business and Henry who=20
probably cast the bells attributed to his father. Henry cast a five at =
Wath=20
augmented by Shaws in 1901 of these I think two remain the others been=
=20
recast by Warners.
We then come to James 3 of Barton who did a lot t=
o=20
destroy the reputation of the Harrisons. His most notable casting being=
=93The=20
Major=94 at Newcastle and the =93interesting=94 ring at Castleton, he a=
dvocated=20
the squat profile to give a deeper note for less metal. He was a talent=
ed=20
clockmaker he together with James 4 invented an improved detached escap=
ement=20
and an expanding fly which both received medals from =93The Society for=
the=20
promotion of Arts=94 The improved detached escapement was the fir=
st true=20
gravity escapement.
Lastly the Harrisons did not cast all their bel=
ls to=20
the squat profile advocated by James 3 The bells here at Masham are of=
=20
conventional profile similar to a Lester & Pack and do NOT sound=20
=93Awfull=94 remember listen to the bells not people you meet in pubs. =
They are=20
a fine mellow old style ring. So David if you want to be taken seriousl=
y as=20
a bell historian remember facts are more important than hearsay and=20
fiction.
Yours Ian Johnson

This message was sent to you=
