dwindling into the box and birdcage arrangement; in the latter hung the 178=

bell with a wheel. No wheel is visible in early 20th-century photos, =

which time the belfry had assumed its present (?) form. Mears &a=

Stainbank rehung both bells for swing chiming with new fittings in the=20
fifties.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3D2>When the Bishopsgate bomb exploded the west front blew =

the belfry and roof structure collapsed on top of it and broke up. En=

Heritage mounted a huge rescue campaign as soon as they were able, and this=
is=20
recorded in the Ecclesiological Society's booklet published three or four y=
ears=20
ago. The object was that everything which could be re-used would be.&=
nbsp;=20
Certainly the pre-bombing timber tower structure was of considerable intere=
st=20
and many of the timbers survived and would have been re-used with the=20
bells.</FONT></DIV>
