The tenor and the clock were given by King Edward VII in memory of Mr=20
Christopher Sykes who died in 1898; at the end of his reign The King gave t=

<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>I have seen these bells within the last te=
n=20
years. The two smaller are hung dead and sounded only by clock=20
hammers. The largest bell, originally hung for ringing, has an early=
=20
'motorized clapper' which no longer works; the bell is sounded now by an=20
Ellacombe Hammer the rope of which comes down to the ground floor half way =
along=20
the south wall.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>The tower is most unsuitable for a ring of=
=20
bells. It is not large in area. The ground floor has black and =
white=20
marble paving and contains the Florentine marble font placed centrall=
y=20
which is in regular use, not least for royal baptisms. The walls have =
rich=20
oak panelling, surmounted by gilded angels, and falling towards the centre =
are=20
eight Colours of the Royal Norfolk Regiment. Bellropes would foul the=
se,=20
compromise the font and also partly obscure the royal hatchment over t=
he=20
west window (this was carried on the side of the funeral carriage of King G=
eorge=20
V and King George VI).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>The first floor of the tower is only =
about 8=20
feet high and two thirds of it is occupied by the clock=20
movement.</FONT></DIV>

which hang on elm stocks fixed on a wooden frame.</FONT></DIV>
