originally a chapel of ease of Rochdale Parish) was "replaced" in late=

Victorian times by Christ Church.... except that it didn't quite=20

happen.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3D2>They built the new church and it became the centre of P=

arish=20

activity with old St Mary's reduced to being used as a chapel of ease with =

its=20

own congregation.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3D2>On the formation of the Diocese of Manchester, the dili=

gent=20

new Bishop studying his new empire noticed that Christ Church had never bee=

n=20

formally designatd the Parish Church and worse still, had never been licens=

ed=20

for marriages.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3D2></FONT> </DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3D2>This meant that there were now very many couples who th=

ought=20

they were married and were not... and that there were rather a lot of basta=

rds=20

about the area. (nothing changes there then!)</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3D2>The legal inheiritance problems arising from this would=

be=20

enormous so it resulted in "The Rochdale Parishes Marriages Act" being pass=

ed=20

through Parliament to retrospectively ligitimise everybody.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3D2>In more recent time Christ Church has been abandoned an=

d St=20

Mary's is again the active Parish Church.</FONT></DIV>
