<DIV>interestingly the old 6th and 7th of the Lester & Pack 1754 ring of 8 

at Berwick on Tweed had their crowns removed. When rung in 1972 these two bells 

had metal girdles for their crowns that were fixed to the shoulders of the 

bells. They just sounded like an "old style eight " and it was not apparentthat
