better belfry for them than St Dunstan-in-the-West. It is about the same si=

The bell chamber is very lofty. As at the East, the upper corners are squin=

off, in this case to carry the Lantern. The bell chamber windows are about =
the=20
same size and style. Both have stone louvres. The building materials are=20
Portland Stone and London stock bricks. There is (was) in both cases a low =
clock=20
/ silence chamber beween the ringers and the bells. The most significant=20
differences would be that at the East, the sound was deflected downwards fr=
om=20
the reinforced concrete roof (at the West it is the heavy lead covered Lant=
ern=20
floor). The East louvres were well bricked up behind to raise the bott=
om of=20
the sound exit above the lips of the upturned bells. The West louvres would=
=20
require this, as anyone who has heard the single bell (details again on DrL=

site) will testify.</FONT></DIV>

East (old and new) were good. I swing-chimed some of the West bells with th=

bare ropes which existed down to c1970 and the sound from above was not=20
pleasant. As I saw them, one had broken canons and was on top of the f=

the tenor, possibly the 7th also, was cracked. Apart from the peal boards =
(the=20
one in the porch quite superb) there is nothing left - floors all renewed a=

the new 11 cwt bell hanging on a deadstock in the centre of the tower.=
