and it is not specific as to the nature of the frame and fittings - it deal=

only with the parts which needed attention - viz the bearings (Heywood=20
lubricators), clapper joints (bushed with lignum vitae), 2nd stay (type not=

stated), pulleys and "All the ironwork of the fittings and of the framework=

red with rust."</FONT></DIV>

reasonable to suppose that they had cast-iron headstocks etc and proba=

as the tower was indeed very small, compare Bamford-in-the-Peak with which =
the=20
parish was united.The old steel ring at Bamford were in a timber frame (or=
=20
rather three two bell frames one above the other) in a similarly very =

tower. However, it may be that JT & Co were referring to the tie rods,=

<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>Vic Hallam's book has a picture of the tow=

Sheffield, and there was a fair bit about the building of the Ladybower, ev=

showing (silent) footage of the last service in Derwent Church, and sh=

of it being dismantled down to the lower courses and leaving the tower and=

the tower was blown up and there was some sad film of that. </FONT></D=

atmosphere.</FONT> </DIV>

regarding Derwent Woodlands. I confess I had forgotten that we had discus=
sed=20
it before!<BR><BR>From looking at DLCs earlier email and at GAD and Pat H=

books on Derbyshire bells, we appear to have the following information ab=
out=20
the ring of 4 bells, all cast by Taylor's in 1901:<BR><BR>1. JOHN TAYLOR =
&=20
CO * FOUNDERS * LOUGHBOROUGH * LEICESTERSHIRE *<BR>(31", 6-0-17, C)<BR><B=

JOHN TAYLOR & CO * FOUNDERS * LOUGHBOROUGH * LEICESTERSHIRE * / (vine=

border)<BR>(32 1/2", 6-1-27 in B)<BR><BR>3. (inscription unknown)<BR>(36 =
1/4",=20
8-2-16, A)<BR><BR>4. COLONEL J.C. CAVENDISH GAVE US AND THE TAYLORS OF=20
LOUGHBOROUGH MADE US 1901<BR>(40 1/2", 12-3-6, G)<BR><BR>DLC states that =
the=20
bells were fitted with cast iron stocks and frame, however, GAD states th=
at=20
the bells were hung in a "strong English oak frame"<BR><BR>As regards the=
fate=20
of the bells, GAD states that the treble went to St Philip's Chaddesden t=
o=20
become the single bell. I forgot to photocopy this entry from the book so=
=20
don't have it to hand (I'm using the copies from work - most of my bell b=
ooks=20
are at my parents' house several hundred miles away). The 2nd went to=20
Scarcliffe to become 3/5 (now 6/8). This bell is listed under the Scarcli=
ffe=20
entry. The two bell crowns at Scarcliffe are actually from two of Scarcli=
ffe's=20
own bells, not those from Derwent Woodlands.<BR><BR>The Derwent Woodlands=
=20
entry in the book states that both of the back two went to Chelmorton to =
make=20
a treble and tenor. However, the Chelmorton entry only mentions one bell,=
=20
recast into the treble. The tenor there was a recast of an existing bell =
at=20
Chelmorton. Part of the inscription on the treble reads:<BR><BR>I WAS REC=
AST=20
BY TAYLORS OF LOUGHBOROUGH 1960 FROM A BELL OF DERWENT GIVEN BY COL:J.C.=
=20
CAVENDISH 1901<BR><BR>Clearly, therefore, this was cast from the Derwent=
=20
tenor.<BR><BR>From all of the above, there would appear to be the followi=
ng=20
outstanding questions:<BR><BR>1) What happened to the 3rd bell? Did it in=
fact=20
go to Chelmorton as scrap to help pay for the work there?<BR><BR>2) What =
were=20
the frame and fittings? The two descriptions appear contradictory. There =
are a=20
number of pictures of the tower (which appears to have stood at the=20
north-western corner of the church) on the web, and it appears very small=
-=20
would the bells have fitted in a timber frame or would it have needed to =
be a=20
cast iron H frame?<BR><BR>3) Were parts of the frame or any of the fittin=
gs=20
reused anywhere after removal?<BR><BR>I will try to get a copy of the boo=
k on=20
the creation of the reservoir. Looking on the web it appears that it is e=
asily=20
and fairly cheaply available.<BR><BR>So, over to DLC and=20
GAD!<BR><BR>David<BR><BR>-- <BR><BR>Whatever you Wanadoo:<BR><A=20
