<html><div style='background-color:'><DIV class=RTE>This is rather off-topic, but I think it worth bringing to people's attention the problems of spam (junk email) caused by having an email address on web sites. Many people on this list maintain websites, and as they will probably know there are things known as 'spam robots' which trawl the internet looking for email addresses to add to spamming lists. Consequrntly, if you have your email address on a non-spam protected website, you are likely to receive increasing amounts of spam.</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>One solution which has been adopted is to replace the @ sign with -at- or someting similar, and anyone clicking the link has to amend it before sending. This is no longer considered to be sufficient to stop spam robots, as they can now spot this and correct the addresses. This system is used by Roger Bailey on his change ringing resources page. I recently emailed Roger some links and specifically asked him not to put my current email address on the site as I don't want it over-spammed. He ignored this and did it anyway, and so far has not responded to my request to remove it. I don't know whether others have had this problem.</DIV>

<DIV class=RTE>Anyway, moving on to practical solutions, Mark Davies has come up with a relatively simple but highly effective method of protecting email addresses on websites from spam robots. Using this system, the links look and behave like normal hyperlinks, but are safe from spam as nothing recognisable as an email address appears in the html code for the site. Instructions on the use of this system and the required javascript file can be found on Mark's site at <A href="http://www.bronze-age.com/nospam/">http://www.bronze-age.com/nospam/</A>. It does require people viewing the pages to have javascript-enabled browsers, but all modern we browsers are anyway. I use this system on my various websites, and I think it is entirely spam proof.</DIV>
