Primitive timber rope guide. (GF) Langford: Open stone gable Stanford: Not been up. Bell gone West Tofts: Oak (?) frame for 8; 1850/56; the brasses were still in it when= I visited. Two trebles were on top.=20 In 1965 the bells were stored at West Tofts camp, but were brought back to = West Tofts Church, excepting the turret bell from Langford (supposed to hav= e gone overseas) and that from Stanford (recast as Kilifi tenor). The West = Tofts bells had their headstocks on, with ring gudgeons; wheels stacked sep= arately. All had clappers, the back five ex Tottington being of the "Mallow= s sledgehammer" type, as at Fundenhall and (formerly) Beetley. The circular= Day rope guide was in situ, these bells also formerly being GF.=20 We removed the front five ex Tottington on January 31st 1969 and the remain= der were stolen in two separate raids shortly afterwards. Certainly the ex-= West Tofts wheels and the rope guide were subsequently used elsewhere. The West Tofts bells were: Treble 5-1-2 1/2 2nd 5-0-6 1/2 both cast 9th May 1856 3rd 5-1-11=20=20=20=20=20=20 4th 5-1-10=20 5th 5-1-2 John Draper, Thetford, 1618=20=20 6th 6-3-17 7th 8-2-16 Tenor 12-1-3 Nos. 3,4,6,7,8 cast 1849, opened 2nd August 1850 Sanctus 1 1-1-18 Sanctus 2 1-2-12 Cast 27th August 1856 These bells are still in the gable over the chancel arch. The trebles, sanctus bells and a small bell for Merton Hall were sent out 1= 6th September 1856. The seven tower bells all had ornate canons (details no= t taken). As you will see, the front five are all pretty close, the 2nd being the hea= viest and the 5th (just) the lightest.
