CLAREMONT St. 7 bells 27/6/49. In this tower with spire, near the Glasgow Eye Infirmary, hangs a chime of = six bells and a single bell. The bells are all of cast steel and were cast by Naylor, Vickers & Co. but = they were so rusty and at some height that I did not see the date. Dr Eeles= in CB Kincardineshire p.50 gives "Trinity Glasgow, (6. tenor 12 cwt 45"d.)= "=20 Across the roof of the bell chamber hangs a large square beam with a diagon= al vertical. To these are bolted the crowns of the 6 steel bells, three eac= h side at 45 degrees to the vertical. Crowns are of the flange type connect= ed by webs to the crown proper. Clappers are provided with a spring inside = to hold them off the bell. Ropes and wires connect these clappers to a chim= ing machine manually operated. A barrel with cam shaped lugs is rotated thr= ough one gear stage by a huge flywheel which has a peg in the circumference= for hand operation. It has not been used for some years and wires are very= slack. Hard work I should think. Apart from this there is a single bell hung for swinging in a frame but fit= ted with a large counterbalance weight. All bells struck had a very poor to= ne and showered rust down. The rope to the single bell has the remains of a= sally.
