The tower is large (18 f= oot square), and the bells hang in a line across the middle, all swinging e= ast-west. This would mean that augmentation would not be straightforward, b= ut this configuration is the most economical on frame components, which is = presumably why it was adopted. There is a story about the Winksley bells, which may be true or may be ap= ocryphal. The bells were given in memory of a soldier who had been killed i= n the war, and, so the story goes, the donors of the bells asked the church= how many bells they wanted. The church replied to the effect that four sho= uld be enough, and so four were ordered. As I say, whether this is true I h= ave no idea, but the tower could certainly hold a much larger ring.
