[This is one important reason, certainly. I understand the apart from St Ja=
mes (the present cathedral), St Mary (nearly next to it), and St Mary-le-to=
wer, Ipswich were also considered. However, they knew that they would want =
to extend the building and St Mary-le-tower was on a restricted site and St=
Mary's, Bury St Edmunds, was too fine a church to alter substantially. St =
James, on the other hand, had a fine nave but an unremarkable Victorian cha=
ncel, and there was room to extend. Hence it was very suitable for the new =
cathedral]
