It isn't the only redundant metal frame rema= ining in a tower. The old cast iron 8-bell frame (by Blackbourne) remains a= bove the present installation at South Petherton. The old 3rd still hangs i= n its pit, bereft of all fittings apart from headstock, bearings and an Ell= acombe hammer. I don't think it was preserved for any his= torical=20 reason - it was probably just easier to leave it there. It isn't the only=20 redundant metal frame remaining in a tower.
