My understanding is that Sottanstall wrote two volumes, one a theory book and one of treble bob compositions. The compositions were published, but the theory not - or at least not in full. The single copy of the theory books belongs to YACR and resides in York Minster library. It is partly hand-written and partly printed, which suggests that some sections at least might have been published as pamphlets. The book is in a very poor condition - I've seen it a number of times. I have a copy of "Elements of Campanalogia", or "an Essay on the Art of Ringing", by William Sottanstall, of Sowerby, Yorkshire. Part Second, Huddersfield, 1867. This has 960 pages, with xx pages of index and appendices. I also have a copy of "The Art of Change Ringing" by Benjamin Thackrah, Dewsbury 1852. This is the first 119 pages of the volume. Page 120 begins "The Art of Ringing" Part II by William Sottenstall (sic) with the following note: "(The following pages, through the kind permission of Mr W Sottenstall, are now published for the first time, and form a valuable addition to the preceding part of theis Work)" The first nine pages are an explanation of in and out of course and the proof of Oxford and Kent Major. The remaining 58 pages are devoted to peal compositions in various methods. I've not checked if these compositions appear in the 1867 book. Has anyone else copies of these works and can check if theirs are the same?
