This 165 + viii page book, 120 x 180 mm, commences with
letters on ringing, shows a great bell diagram and then extensive
learning to ring
information.
<p class="MsoNormal">It details all the plain methods and goes on to
treble bob
and surprise methods, with explanations from doubles to maximus.<span
style=""> </span>Variations of methods are also noted.<span style="">
</span>It goes into conducting and includes numerous
compositions, especially in the final pages.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><br>
Of special interest is the means of returning to
rounds from
a promiscuous position (his words) in Grandsire Triples, Plain Bob
Triples and
Stedman Triples.<span style=""> </span>A vocabulary of terms
and a list of the College Youth peals from 1724 to 1873 complete the
book.</p>

The facsimile shows some foxing and two unfortunate ink
smudges, due to the condition of the original.<span style="">
</span>It is printed on acid-free off-white paper, hand sewn and bound
with
Maroon hard covers and gold printing on the spine and cover. <o:p><br>

This 187 + viii page book, 116 x 186 mm, book
starts off
with the usual how to ring a bell, changes, snapping and so forth.<span
style=""> </span>It then gets deep into a whole raft of
methods totally outlawed by today’s central council.<span style=""> </span>The
names are common to places in <st1:place w:st="on">Yorkshire</st1:place>,
so like Sottenstall, I must presume that
Thackrah was a Yorkshireman, besides, the book was published in
Dewsbury.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><br>
>From page 120 onwards, there is a Part II by
William
Sottenstall.<span style=""> </span>It is entitled ‘An
explanation of the nature and cause of false changes’.<span style=""> </span>This
section includes several peal
compositions, including names and details of some early peals rung in <st1:place
w:st="on">Yorkshire</st1:place>.</p>

Unlike Banister, this facsimile has no foxing or
ink smudges
and is an excellent copy of the original.<span style="">
</span>It too is printed on acid-free off-white paper, hand sewn and
bound with
hard covers with printing on the spine and cover.</p>

Future facsimile copies under consideration are
the Monk’s 5<sup>th</sup>
edition of Campanalogia Improved (1766) and also the 2<sup>nd</sup>
edition of
Campanalogia (1698).<o:p></o:p>
