It has to be confessed that, arrogant as Grimthorpe was, he was a very clever man. His gravity escapement for turret clocks is a work of genius and has stood the test of time unsurpassed. <BR>

When it comes to bells however, the design he advocated was less successful, but we must remember that much of what was being cast during his era was pretty dreadful and judge his bells against ones from the same period and not against the glorious sounds we have got used to from the true harmonic rings of later times. I guess the nearest thing left to a Grimthorpe ring are the twelve at St Paul's Cathedral - for which we know the designs were 'tampered' with by the bell founder in order to ensure something approaching a reasonable sounding ring, so not even they sound exactly as Grimthorpe had intended. <BR>

Personally I have quite an affection for the growly old buckets at St Paul's, but accept this opinion differs from that held by many.<BR>
