You will notice that at no point did I say that I felt Cornhill should be deprived of a new ring: that's the locals choice and well done to them for taking the initiative.

As many know, I have rather a soft spot for the somewhat idiosyncratic sound of the current Cornhill ring (as did the late Chris Dalton) and will be sorry to see them go, but I don't have ring there every week, so it's not my place to condemn the present scheme. Does it really matter that they are a 20th century example of old style tuning? Surely it's their uniqueness that makes them a bit different and of historic interest to future generations?

If a new home can be found for the old bells, all well and good ...you never know, in a different tower, they could be transformed into something quite good! If not, there will, no doubt, be only few who will mourn their loss.

This is all rather silly. Cornhill are a poor example of an old-style ring - take a look at them: they're mainly 20th century - much that is "old" about them has long gone. It's a completely different situation to St Martin-in-the-Fields which were an historic ring, partially tuned and poorly clappered (and now very good at Swan).

In practical terms Cornhill bells are too big for the tower: they require a two tier frame (5 on 7) so low down that the intermediate chamber is inadequate for sound balancing. Best to start again with a better plan.

And if you want old-style go to St Paul's, St Sepulchre's or Southwark - all much finer in those terms, and enjoyed by many. Let Cornhill have the decent ring it has never had.
