From the 1950’s onwards the late Ranald Clouston made a series of visits to the North Riding of Yorkshire to catalogue all the church bells in the area. Copies of each report were sent to the Diocese and to other interested parties. On Ranalds death his Collection of bell material relating to England was deposited at the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford. They, and his daughter, Katharine, have indicated their agreement to this publication.

Where changes have occurred since then, either by new research which has revised information as to the founders of bells, or restorations and augmentations of installations, so at the end of the material there is a copy of the data included in the National Bell Register (NBR) for the whole of York Diocese which has (sometimes) revised allocations as to the founder of a bell. Also included are brief details of bellfounders currently known to have been resident in the area. All this extra data is from the pen of George Dawson, as are the great majority of the photographs of bells, usually obtained when they were in the process of restoration.
