<DIV><FONT size=2 face="Comic Sans MS">I've been in touch with Tim Reynolds (the
DAC Archaeologist) who doesn't think it's a bell pit at all, but says that some
of the locals are fixed on the idea - to the extent of ignoring other arguments
and possibilities!. Apparently the pit is not bell shaped, it is not very deep,
and on the evidence of the primary fill is probably C18/C19th rather than C14th.
He thinks (subject to analysis) that the metal is lead</FONT></DIV>
