brings to mind my much missed friend Stephen Ivin and the project at St Thomas
Oxford. Steve always claimed that the best part of the job was breaking up the
last of the old ring in the churchyard. A passing member of the public
commented, "what a pity, it says 1706 on them" to which Steve quickly replied,
"never mind madam, it does on the new ones too!" Fond

the metal from for new bells? Was it virgin metal straight from the mine? If
previously used then surely it was recast – whether it had been scrap bells or
