In 1797, a Wm. BRAKELL served as one of two bailiffs under Preston's
Mayor.<br clear="none">

One or more "Mr. William BRAKELL"s served on the jury at the Preston
Court Leet in 1795, 1802, 1803, 1806, and no doubt in other years as
well. However, he wasn't on the jury during the session held on 27
Oct 1808, when the court recorded the following:<br clear="none">

On the other hand, a deed at the National Archives records that a
William Hutton of Preston took out a £4000 mortgage in 1809 with
"William Brakell of Preston, gent. of Hyde Hall, Denton".<br clear="none">

The problem is that I can't corroborate this. It seems that a John
Gould held Hyde Hall from 1806 for many years - see

I suggest that this might be enough to make the W Brakell on the
bell more likely a donor than a founder. I dare say a brazier
probably couldn't cast a bell - but he might know of one who would
welcome a cheap supply of metal!<br clear="none">

In 1833, the ship <i>Lloyds </i>transported 200 convicts to NSW;
among them was a William Brakell who had been convicted at the
Lancaster Quarter Session. (No further info in this source;
Lancaster is a long way from Preston but it is also the county
town.)<br clear="none">

A more general search shows that the surname Brakell occurred in
various place in Lancashire at that time, especially it seems in
Preston and its vicinity. A few also occur in Cumbria, but it is
clearly a Lancs name even today [scroll down to the map at
<a rel="nofollow" shape="rect" class="yiv3113583627moz-txt-link-freetext" target="_blank" href="https://www.ancestry.co.uk/name-origin?surname=brakell">https://www.ancestry.co.uk/name-origin?surname=brakell</a>]. However it
is extremely rare; there are supposedly 47 Brakells in England.<br clear="none">

There is a Dutch surname "van Brakell" or Brakel, but Brakell
appears to be English:<br clear="none">

outside of Lancs, though not as rare as Brakell. My 4xgrt
grandfather Rev. Thomas Greenall, minster of Bethesda Street
Congregational Chapel in Burnley, retired to Preston for the fresh
sea air in the 1840s; his son Thomas junior married Anne Patterson,
a daughter of an Edinburgh solicitor, at Preston in 1851. Their son
William Patterson Greenall brought the name down south in the
1870s.]<br clear="none">
