observe that clock people seem to be as reluctant to collect
details about bells as bell people are to record information
on clocks. I think people with these separate interests tend
to feel out of their comfort zones (or just overburdened).
Not long ago I asked a couple of “clockies” (as they call
themselves) if they could take some basic details of bells
when visiting off-radar clocks, e.g. in public buildings,
country house stable clocks etc. They had been doing a lot
of exploring in such places. I was only suggesting some very
basic details – but they really didn’t want to do
it. Knowing nothing about bells was clearly one reason – but
I think that just having too many other things they were
recording was a big factor too.

I fully accept the need to provide the replacement Dove solution
- my previous queries are for the longer term scope of what is
& is not held by Dove & how it can easily provide extra
detail (including clocks etc.) without calling on any volunteer
effort per query.

I take all the responses from Chris to be a potential positive
means of having 2 freestanding databases maintained by experts in
their field with the potential for links per location to aid
access to the other detail.

I imagine most bell professionals could not take useful detail re
clocks!

I looked at the AHS website - they state they have listed 6,000
clocks (so Dove would not want to compete):
turret clocks, recording all UK-made turret clocks whether located
in the UK or abroad. The database was started in 1999 and
currently holds records on over 6000 clocks. We are constantly
adding records and seeking information on clocks that exist or
used to exist in buildings, museums, or private collections.
