<font face="Times New Roman">I had the same thought regarding U and
W, but that leaves X.<br>
<br>
It does seem as if someone used the whole set just because they
could.<br>
Either through illiteracy, or to 'brand' the bells with a set of
letters only that founder had, or both.<br>
Or maybe they added an 'inscription' when none was commissioned.<br>

<p>Could anyone please explain why alphabet bells were
cast? We have a fine example on display at Carlisle
Cathedral cast in c1380 by John de Kirkham. It is
only missing the letters U, W and X.</p>
