I was in the last QP there,, June 2012. Since then a louvre has blown in and smashed a wheel. Their unringability is due in part to the corroded cast iron foundation beams on which the frame sits. The installation has suffered much from the salty air. All have the Redenhall patent clapper, cast iron pulleys, and central stays (come made from old Christmas trees etc). Most of the oil bottles have disappeared.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'>Fundenhall have been unringable for decades. I remember the woodwork department at school patching and repairing wheels for a number of Paul Cattermole’s projects, including Fundenhall. Work on the project had begun in March 2010, with help and enthusiasm on all sides, not only from members of the Association but also from the Keltek Trust, the bellfounders, from whom advice had been obtained without charge, and architect Ruth Blackman, who had given assistance free of charge.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'>Aubrey reported that major problems had been encountered, beginning with the cost, which had risen from an original estimate of £40,000 to between £70,00 and £80,000, through a combination of the Whitechapel quote, building work and consultants’ fees. As well as the new, higher, rate of VAT, the Whitechapel quote had identified the need for a new bell. The existing third was too light, and would require the tenor to be re‑tuned, which Paul had advised should not be done because of the old bell’s fine tone. Attempts to find an alternative bell from a restoration project at High Wycombe had however produced a bell which the foundry deemed to heavy, which left the provision of a new bell as the only alternative, at a cost of £8‑10,000. Efforts had been made to contain the costs, including Aubrey’s offer to make the wheels, but the amount involved was considered too much for the Association to undertake. It had also been learned that the Parish of Fundenhall had financial problems and was not in a position to participate in the promotion of a bell restoration project.
