According to a 1458 Inventory (also in Deedes and Walters) the tower had a ring of three and a Sanctus bell so I'd imagine they were probably made into four in 1637 when the present 3<sup>rd</sup> and tenor were cast before being augmented to five in 1862 by
Mears, from what I have read they never seem to have been an easy five and even as early as 1884 they were described as being in "bad going order" which suggests to me that there were tower issues. They did however continue to be rung until about 1904 and
after being unringble for about 60 years they were eventually patched by a south Hackney band in 1965, my Friend Paul cammiade actually rang there a couple of years later in 1978 and he described the tenor as being so awkward that it had to be rung with a
strapper Clearly the 1982 rehang was needed!</div>

Navestock, Essex replaced an earlier treble of five, or whether this is<br>
the date of the augmentation from four? Deedes and Walters' 'Church<br>
Bells of Essex' doesn't say, and Mortant's 'History and Antiquities of<br>
Essex' (1768) doesn't say how many bells there were at the time. I cn't<br>
find any newspaper reports around the time of the 1862 casting. The<br>
Ringing World articles on 1965/275, 1981/843 and 1982/688 don't help.<br>
