Alan Reading has put together a nice new major composition, as he reported on facebook earlier today.

Nearly all rung treble-dodging methods have the treble doing a single dodge in each place. One of the very few exceptions is Champion surprise major, first pealed in 1980. Champion is a mx method where the treble triple-dodges in each place. It takes Bristol surprise major as it's template, and stretches this out to a triple-dodging method by inserting hunting on four:

Champion Surprise major m &x5x5x5x4.5x5x5x5.36.4x4x4x4.5x4x4x4x1, 18

Alan has put together an interesting new composition based on an analogous method that stretches out Deva surprise major (Bristol over, Superlative with a 18 halflead change under):

New method j &-5-5-5-4.5-5-5-5.36-4-4-4-5-4-4-36-1, 18

In Alan's words:
"If you ring the first lead with a 78 half-lead it gives you the cyclic shunt and then call 3 4ths place bobs on the runs (at 1 for reverse runs and 2 for forward runs)"

The reason this works is that the half-lead row (56473821) is, you guessed it, in the mega-tittums coursing order. Deva really is a special method to have this property.

So changing the place from 18 to 78 moves you to a different part of the same course - the same device has been used in various spliced royal, maximus and higher-numbers mega-tittums compositions in recent years.

(And as I pointed out again in April, having mega tittums at the half lead and palindromic symmetry leads to regular methods - http://www.bellringers.net/pipermail/ringing-theory_bellringers.net/2011-April/003781.html).

Alan has thus cleverly used the dynamic, run-bearing potential of Deva (a property much beloved by AJB for his quarter-peals in the method), stitched together the right leads using a combination of 2nd and 8ths place leadends, and combined this with a neat way to move between the cyclic courses. Good work.

His composition hits the jackpot of containing all 96 possible run-rows of each type (xxxx5678, xxxx8765, 5678xxxx, 8765xxxx and cyclic rotations thereof), which is a great benchmark.

I also enjoyed ringing Alan's composition of Bristol major (5024 #6) last week. This has a different feel from MBD's pioneering next-generation compositions of Bristol, but it has some nice touches.

Keep them coming...
