Surely this is the same as the argument of wooden boss/chute vs 
plastic drainpipe arrangements.

Wood will wear smooth and be less damaging to the rope whereas the 
initially smooth plastic will degenerate and eventually present an 
abrasive surface.

I could see that a plastic box coule be lighter in weight but would 
it be able to support the more generously framed ringers within the 
exercise.
