For a full account see The Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Thor=
nhill, The Story of the Installation of the New Bells in 1980 by Revd Nicho=
las Webb, B.A. Rector of Thornhill (Kirkfield Press Henley Avenue, Thornhil=
l, Dewsbury).
The old six were previously at Mirfield (!), prior to the installation of t=
he new ten in the new tower there in 1873.
The late Fr Nicholas Webb was a friend of mine - he died young, suddenly an=
d tragically a few years ago. He held very strong views, not least about t=
he God-given opportunity when "a willing band of ringers with expertise, sa=
ddled with an extremely difficult, heavy-going ring of six, were presented =
by their ringing Rector with the chance of transferring a light ring of eig=
ht from a redundant church at Todmorden".
There was "continual contact with the chairman of the Redundant Bells Commi=
ttee of the CCCBR". "There was no way that Thornhill could store =A35000 wo=
rth of redundant bells because of the risk of theft, no offers from anyone =
to purchase the bells stand an adverse cash flow of over =A38000 for an ind=
efinite period". It came to this: if Thornhill could not sell their bells,=
they could not afford the money for the Cross Stone octave. One might add=
that in 1980 there was no Keltek trust!
The project was approved by Wilf Moreton. It is sad that the back five of =
the old six with their 1914 fittings could not be saved. But as it turned o=
ut, within a few years the bells (with many other projects at Thornhill) we=
re to prove Nick's lasting memorial and the lessons learned were, amongst o=
thers, to lead to the foundation of the Keltek Trust.

Why did they decide to replace the bells with the current eight? Does any=
one
know? I can well believe that the bells were not wonderful, but the pres=
ent
eight aren't reckoned to be too wonderful either.
