As David Bryant states the four remaining bells were removed in 1978 and
the fate as stated is correct.

I did manage to see the four remaining bells before removal and if
memory serves me correctly these were hung on steel girders, the former
frame already removed. The clock struck the quarters and the hour.

There were three peals on the bells the first in 1902 the second 2 in
1904. The first peal was commemorated on a peal board which hung in the
tower. It was thought that this board was lost when the remaining
artifacts were cleared out of the church at the end of the 1970's - the
congregation have, since the mid-1970's, met in the adjacent church
hall. However, in early 2002 I was made aware of its continued
existence in the church cellar where it appears to have lain for over 20
years. Following some correspondence with the Church Elders I have
managed to obtain this peal board and it will ultimately hang in the
tower of nearby Lightcliffe St. Matthew's when we are in a position to
lift a trap door and haul it up.

The former Congregational Church still stands and has seen a variety of
uses over the years - initially as an Arts and Crafts Centre and
latterly as offices. The clock (or more likely a new mechanism) has
been re-installed but there are, of course, no chimes. Oh, for a nice
little 6 (or even 8) in the tower! For those of you with a copy of
TowerBase from dated August 2002 onwards you will find a picture of this
quite substantial building and tower.

Regards

Two bells (4 and 5) were sold to C.H. Potts in 1933. The others remained
in the tower until December 1978. The two trebles are now at Kimcote
(Leics). The others were scrapped.

Were the four remaining bells in a ringable state until they were
removed - did they still have ringing fittings?

David
