[Bell Historians] Rishangles

Ah yes, Rishangles. This one was a bit of a saga. First of all, there were never four bells here (as stated on the website); they were a derelict three, which Ranald Clouston visited in 1952 and again in 1976 after the church had been closed. He contacted me - I was Norwich's Diocesan Bells Adviser at the time - to see if I could suggest a home for this complete Brasyer three. I had lately inspected the tower at Newton Flotman which contained a single, and not very good bell by W Brend, hung for ringing and in poor order in a ?16thC and later 2-bell frame, which looked as if it had been cut down from something larger. All the floors in the tower were in the wrong place, the installation was "interesting" but not remarkable and the bell was a poor thing. They applied for a Faculty to remove the bells from the St Edmundsbury Diocese and obtained a second Faculty to transfer them to the Norwich Diocese. They were put into store at Newton whilst estimates were obtained. At that point I returned to Kent and turned over the papers to my successor, Fr Peter Bond. As things stood, JT were going to tune and hang the Rishangles bells at Newton in a new frame fior six, with canon retaining stocks; the 17thC bell being cast into two trebles to make 5. Money was slow coming in despite CCC and NDA grants and the promise of local assistance. By 1983, following a major pastoral upheaval the grants were put into abeyance whilst the bells languished in storage. Finally in 1987 the new Rector - after a long interregnum - managed to get some money together, and the three bells were hung at Newton Flotman, for chiming, by Whitechapel. Don't know any other details but it could have ended up as long a saga as Oxborough (1948-62) and Colchester St Nicholas (1952-2000 and still ongoing at Basildon).

Bell details 2.10.1976:

Treble: 29.1/16" C# - 0.3 + Hec Fit Scorum * Campa Laude Bonorum

Second: 32.1/8" B + 0.12 + Celefti Manna * Tua Proles Nos Cibet Anna

Tenor: 35.7/16" A + 0.29 + Meritis Edmundi * Simus a Crimine Mundi

All with canons; two tenors have three Brasyer sprigged shields, face cross and lion's face stop; treble has three Brasyer ermine shield, Thomas Potter's cross and the lion's face stop, contraction marks over Scorum and Campa. The treble possibly earlier ? All from Norwich by Brasyers 1424-1513. Lovely bells and tonally good.

The Newton Flotman bell 33.15/16" A-0.20 anno dni 1616 In 16thC and 17thC two bell frame, much cut about - 3 bells in 1553; one bell sold c1844.
