They were originally hung in 1788 by Edward Simmons, the bellhanger who worked with/for Whitechapel, and an engraving of the church appeared on his published catalogue or list of work (see RW 1992 p.1200). I've been in the church, but not up the tower. Presumably the installation remains more or less as Simmons left it.

Thanks - very thorough information. I've heard that they are to be rehung
for ringing in the near future, although I don't have any specific details.
