I happened to find out a bit about this recently. There was a posting on th=
is list (I think - though it could have been direct contact) last September=
about one of the bells, now in New Zealand. Then - a few nights ago - I fo=
und a reference in the RW for 1966. My notes attached:
Cambridge, St.Michael: One of the Christopher Graye bells of 1683 is now (S=
ept.2002) at St
Augustine's (COE) church in Cashmere, Christchurch, New Zealand. It was gif=
ted to the parish by Great St Mary's, the Cambridge University church. It w=
as one of four bells at St.Michael=92s - three by Christopher Graye 1683, a=
nd the fourth (the tenor bell or largest) by Charles Newman 1684. Newman wa=
s Graye's successor. They worked at Haddenham in Cambridgeshire. The bells=
were apparently sold some time after 1959. The Cashmere bell was installed=
in 1970. It is a good size bell at 81cm diameter (Ex.inf. Bernard Hempseed=
, Sept.2002)
Cambridge, St.Michael: Bells [nine in all] stolen from a London bellfoundry=
store on 4th May by copper thieves. Four of them were awaiting shipment to=
St.Augustine=92s. Cashmere Hills, Christchurch, New Zealand. These were of=
17th century origin and at one time hung at St.Michael & All Angels=92 Chu=
rch, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. They were the gift of Mr. Micha=
el Stewart-Smith, a New Zealander, who is managing director of a London per=
fumery manufacturing company (Ringing World 13 May 1966 p.309)

Does anyone know what happened to the ring of four bells at St Micahel's =
and when. One story I have heard is that they were removed and went abroad.
