My thought was that they might as well have cast a solid block and bored a
hole
in it because that was what it looked like.
I suppose that the reason for not doing it would be that it might produce a
poor
toned bell..... um yes?
According to Pevensner there's a couple of Wiltshire bells that were turned
on lathes; the sanctus at Keevil and the bell at Tytherton Lucas; both very
old bells. No source is given for these remarks.
