The canon-retaining headstocks at Woodton are the old Whitechapel 'cantilev=
er' type, superseded about 15 years ago by their present 'ring' type. I don=
't think they use it now, but there must be hundreds of them around, probab=
ly mercifully few in the Diocese of Blackburn, Alan!

As to how many "coffin" stocks, well, there's only one way to find out, as =
the fitting out records no longer exist. Eight less in Salisbury, at least =
!

And as to how many now defunct bellfounders supplied canon-retainers, this =
should presumably be qualified with 'after the general demise of canons'. T=
he answer is probably something in terms of "All of them by request and non=
e of them by inclination."

Sometime in the early 1980s, a ring of bells was restored at a place=20
called Woodton (Norfolk ?).
In the comic, were a couple of pictures- one of which showed one of=20
the smaller bells fitted a canon retainer shaped like an upside=20
down "V" .
I have not personally seen many of that shape and was wondering=20
what the merits of that design are, and is the design still used.
Also, how many "coffin" style canon retainers did G + J supply and=20
was this the only style of canon retaining headstock they used?
How many of the now defunct bellhangers and founders supplied=20
canon retaining headstocks?
A lot to answer I know!

Alan
