Tubular Bells

Does anyone happen to know about the use of tubular bells in churches?

I was recently told that such a set exists at Llandulas, Powys. 
Apparently the tubes hang from ropes and are struck by hammers near 
the tops. These hammers are operated by wires or ropes from levers 
down below.

If this is the case what are their age and history, and are these 
unique?
