Stays should if possible be made from sapwood the more the better, which I presume an earlier correspondant meant by young ash, if you use the darker heartwood there is less spring within the stay. Changing subject slightly for steam bending of bell wheel soleing we get our sawmill to cut us young green ash sapwood if possible they crown cut it, which steam bends beautifully.

Just don't leave the bells up if you've got stays of green ash - they'll warp. I've seen it!
