I presume you didn’t see my earlier email Anne perhaps because I changed the
subject to one which to me seemed more appropriate! I don’t think there
has been an earlier recorded instance of stays for setting a bell. Of
course as I am sure you know there are earlier records of stays for bracing
a bell wheel.

See Change Ringing Vol 1 where it is recorded on page 57 that ‘A more likely
reference [to stays for setting a bell] occurs in the Lincoln accounts for
1617’.
