You use the word 'deaden'. Are the bells uncomfortably loud, or just
too resonant.

If too resonant, carpeting the walls of the bell chamber will help
calm down the reverb,

If they are too loud, you need to get more solid stuff between you and
them. The ideal solution would be to install a floating ceiling in
the ringing chamber. This would create a small air space which would
cut the sound quite dramatically.
