The front five are on normal Bowell RSJ headstocks and the tenor is on two =
sections of channel back to back with about a 1" gap between and steel plat=
es welded on top and bottom.

So, essentially the same as a modern Taylor deadstock as using in chimes an=
d carillons.

I sometimes wonder if the likes of Bowell and Warners struggled with harmon=
ic tuning for so long just because they were trying to follow Canon Simpson=
's advice, without realising that Simpson was a bit wide of the mark as reg=
ards where to tune to control which partials.

Is it known whether they were trying to follow Simpson's ideas to the lette=
r and get a major third tierce rather than a minor third?
