Hugh? I have only seen it used for ringing a bell without wheel or
without touching what is left of the wheel.
What you describe is usually referred to as ringing from, or on, the
wheel. Very useful for testing, setting clappers, etc. but not very H&S
compatible, although not as iffy as "Bergholting"
I first herd the term in the early 1970's, either GDA or CJD.

The term 'Bergholt' is generally inappropriate. It is usually used to
refer to ringing bells by handling the wheels, but in actual fact the
East Bergholt bells do not have wheels.
