The real question is were the bells really worth saving?

On the evidence of the Murphy eight in St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne
and the knowledge that Murphy bells are usually fairly low in tin
content, therefore having a tendency to sound dull and mournful, I would
suggest that they probably weren't. Therefore, money from Keltek,
Central Council and any other available funds would be better used to
rescue a rather more significant ring.
