It did go like the side of a house, but that was nothing to do with the
bell, merely the way it was hung. I rang at Sampford Spiney in August,
1976 and have a note that it was a dismal sounding bell.

Subject: [Bell Historians] Old Pennington tenor bell at St. Mary, Sampford
Spiney

I would like to know the details of the old Pennington tenor bell at
St. Mary, Sampford Spiney in Devon. This bell was broken up and recast
(with additional metal) in to the two new trebles for Sampford Spiney
and three other bells including the new Canewdon 2nd bell at
Whitechapel on April 25th 2008.
I have been told that it was cracked, of poor tone and that it rang
like a bell twice its weight when last rung in the 1970's. But I would
like to know if this is all true and more, so it can be added to my
information on the Canewdon bells.
Brian Meldon.
