Subject: [Bell Historians] Tournai

I've just stumbled across the following article in the New
York Times (11 Nov 1883) about restoration work being done
on Sherborne Abbey

http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9C01E4DA163AEF33A25752C1A9

It finishes with the sentence, 'This bell [Sherborne tenor]
is one of the famous Tournay peal, which Wolsey distributed
in various parts of the country and are now known
respectively as "Great Tom" of Oxford, Lincoln, Exeter and
other places'.

Is there any truth to this? If so, do any of the bells
survive?

Richard

The Sherborne one certainly doesn't. According to Christopher Dalton's
'Dorset' it was recast in 1670 by Thomas Purdue.
