If the gudgeons were safe enough with plain bearings, then why should they
not be with ball bearings?

 Clearly here there was a more substantial failure than b/b collapse.

Ball bearings, no doubt fitted to the old gudgeons, which will have been of
too small a diameter for safe use with ball bearings.

Background: The eight steel bells were rehung with part new fittings, and
with extraordinary devotion, by volunteer labour 18 years ago.

 

Bearings: They were a light shafting type, the sort Richard will be familiar
with as fitted to the bells at St Alphege, Whitstable, but larger of course.

 

What happened: A gudgeon or a bearing housing broke, with like effect on its
opposite number and the bell fell into its pit.

 

Guidance from above, perhaps. But they have a strong band and competent
leadership with plans for the future.

It's a job to see what type of bearings they were.   What happened to cause
