I was shown a bell today at Allhallows in Cumbria that has recently been returned to the parish. According to the church warden, there was an old Allhallows church that was part demolished in 1935 and the builder was allowed to take anything from the site - including two bells. One was given to a mission church and the other was sold. This bell is 40cm diameter, carries the date 1687, and has the founders’ mark which includes the letters W S – presumably W Scott of Wigan. Pictures are attached. My own research at Carlisle in the papers of B L Thompson (he visited Allhallows in July, 1969) turned up this reference to the bells:
The old church had a pair of bells both bearing the date 1687. One of them is at the mission church in Bolton Low Houses and has a markedly shaped waist. The other was sold to Mr Verity at Leeds who collected bells.
So, one has been returned home. Does anyone know the location of the other bell?
