Ringing church bell 13 times

When my husband was small, he rang the bells for his church.  They
were to only ring it 13 times.  Now, at 63 he has started ringing the
bell at our current church in Big Pine Key FL.  He was told to only
ring it 13 times.  Is there a reason for this?  We have been searching
for an answer and no one has been able to answer it for us.
