Hm!   Is 'not as hard as they used to be' really acceptable from what is in
most respects supposed to be a new frame?   I thought they were blooming
hard work when I rang there last year.

The similar (in the sense of A-frames on timber base beams)
unsatisfactory 8 bell  frame at Ashby de la Zouch was replaced a couple
of years ago by:

 

A ten bell frame utilizing the re-used castings sitting on steel beam
bottom sills, etc, lower in the tower.

 

It is quite satisfactory!
