In our local real ale emporium there is, built into the wall of the  
bar, a head-stock with a couple of its fittings.
Beneath this is a bell shaped cavity.

The George is an old coaching inn at the top of what was a steep climb  
out of Portsmouth, on the road to London, where fresh horses would  
have needed on carriages headed north.

The last para is pure conjecture and it would be nice to pass on   
proper details of the bell to the landlord, and may be worth a pint or  
two!
